A backstage pass to 'Moulin Rouge! The Musical'

Mary Thaier heads backstage at the Fabulous Fox to discover how Moulin Rouge! The Musical comes to life.

ST. LOUIS — The first North American tour of the Moulin Rouge! The Musical has taken over the Lou!

Based on the 2001 film from visionary director, Baz Lurhman, the Tony-Award Winning musical has turned the Fox Theatre into a magical world of romance, glitz, grandeur, and glory!

But do you ever wonder how shows like this come to life?

I took a trip backstage at the Fabulous Fox to discover how Moulin Rouge! The Musical comes together behind the scenes.

It takes a village to create theater magic. From props to the sound, and my favorite….the costumes!

Michael Hannah, the Wardrobe Supervisor for the show describes the looks as "Opulent. Lavish. Especially expressing how the Moulin Rouge was presented in its time. It's meant to be over the top. It's meant to be right there, and I think that's what we've achieved, " he said.

But the costumes are only part of the fun that creates the world of the Moulin Rouge! Andrew Iverson, the Head of Props says countless props help to set the scene.

"We have the Duke's flute for the top of show. It doesn't need to be filled because it is resin. We also have francs and stuff too that are designed for us," he said.

But what would a musical be without the music? The stage musical features many of the iconic songs from the movie and also includes recent hits released since the movie premiered 21 years ago. You will find yourself rocking out to familiar tunes from Britney Spears to Lady Gaga.

The Head of Audio, Anthony Jones, says from an audio perspective, it’s a unique show to mix.

"It's a tough show to mix because it's so detailed because there's so many songs, different songs in the show. You have to be very detailed with the lyrics, you know, making sure that the lyrics are heard by everyone but also keeping the music and the energy going so that people can groove in their seats," he said.

But above all, it’s the experience the hardworking crew creates for the audience.

You can catch Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Fabulous Fox through this Sunday.
