ST. LOUIS — A 16-year-old boy was critically injured in a shooting Wednesday afternoon in St. Louis' Walnut Park West neighborhood.

The St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened at about 1:30 p.m. on the 6000 block of Shulte Avenue. Officers responded to a report of gunfire in the area but found no victims; while they were investigating the scene, they learned a 16-year-old boy had arrived at an area hospital with a gunshot wound.

The boy was listed in critical condition, police said. Another person who was with him refused treatment for a minor injury that was not believed to be caused by gunfire.

It was not immediately clear what led up to the shooting. An investigation was underway.

The boy was the second teenager to be shot in St. Louis in less than 24 hours.

Dornae Hayes, a 15-year-old girl from Hazelwood, was fatally shot Tuesday night while she was charging her phone outside an apartment in the Gravois Park neighborhood.

The shooting Wednesday afternoon marked the 27th time a child was injured or killed by gunfire in St. Louis in 2024, according to 5 On Your Side data.
