Man arrested after trying to steal a woman's car, firing gun at a driver in Brentwood, police say

"We are so thrilled the two victims are okay," said Major Angela Hawkins.

BRENTWOOD, Mo. — Police say it was a terrifying time for two innocent people who crossed paths with one man.

Police said the suspect, Davenir Jefferson from St. Louis, first tried to steal a woman's Jeep outside her Brentwood home.

According to court documents, the woman told officers Jefferson "emerged from the bushes" and suddenly tapped on her car window.

"And he said give me that car and he had the pistol in his hand," said Major Angela Hawkins with the Brentwood Police Department.

It happened around 7:30 Tuesday night near the intersection of Flamingo Drive and Thrush Avenue in the Brentwood Forest Condominiums area.

"She decided to get back into her car and drive away," Hawkins said.

Investigators said minutes later, Jefferson then approached a man just feet away.

In the probable cause statement, the victim said he "re-entered his vehicle, at which point he heard multiple gunshots through his rear-view mirror."

He said Johnson shot out one of his windows as he sat in his car.

"He was not injured other than some scrapes from the glass that broke from the projectile. We don't know if the man wan was an intended target," Hawkins added.

Police said thanks to alert witnesses at the scene, they were able to quickly arrest Johnson.

He told officers that "10 to 20 people were chasing him."

"The witnesses didn't see anyone chasing him. All they saw was him firing the weapon. It's kind of our belief at this point that he's suffering from some sort of mental crisis or that he was under the influence of some kind of drug," said Hawkins said.

As for the two victims?

"They're extremely lucky and we could not be more thrilled that they're okay," Hawkins said.

Investigators said Jefferson told them he was high on ecstasy at the time.

They also say he tossed a gun at the scene, which officers found.

Prosecutors charged the Jefferson with vehicle hijacking, first-degree assault or attempt, unlawful use of a weapon and armed criminal action.
