ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Charges have been issued against a Florissant man accused of driving through a construction zone Monday night in St. Louis County and striking three workers.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said charges were issued Tuesday against 33-year-old Mario Eiland, of Florissant, Missouri, for two counts of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in physical injury. Police said he hit and injured three construction workers and then fled the scene.

According to the probable cause statement, the crash happened near the area of New Hall Ferry Road and I-270, north of Pershall Road in St. Louis County Monday night. Police said Eiland drove his Ford Focus through a closed roadway construction zone and struck three men who were working in the zone.

A 22-year-old man and a 35-year-old man suffered moderate injuries and a 38-year-old suffered serious injuries. Two of the workers suffered fractured pelvises and remained in the hospital as of Wednesday. The third worker was treated for road rash and released.

MSHP said the workers were wearing safety vests and highly visible reflective ankle bands. The zone was also well-lit with bright portable lightning.

Witnesses told police Eiland sped through construction barrels, struck the workers and then fled the scene, according to the probable cause statement.

Eiland's wallet was inside the Ford Focus. Police found Eiland not far from the scene and witnesses identified him as the suspect.

Eiland was being held at the St. Louis County Justice Center on a $100,000 cash-only bond without 10%.
