'I heard about 20 to 30 rounds': Crime concerns growing after gunfire in Soulard neighborhood near popular market

"This keeps happening for hours on Sundays. Something has to be done," said James Morino, a concerned neighbor.

ST. LOUIS — On Monday afternoon, a parking lot near Soulard Market was empty, but not so much Sunday night, said neighbor James Morino.

"It sounded loud. I know I heard about 20 to 30 rounds," said Morino.

Police confirmed around 11:30 that night gunfire rang out near the South Broadway area near Soulard Market.

James Morino said people in two cars were in the parking lot near 8th and Carroll Streets shooting at one another.

"I ran to the window, looked out sand saw them shooting at each other out of the car windows. They then went up the ramp of the expressway," said Morino.

Officers went to the area and saw bullets hit at least four cars in the parking lot, and two windows across the street at the Soulard Market Loft apartment building.

A now boarded up window at Pieces STL Bar is just below Morino's apartment.

Morino said that for months now young drivers have gathered at the the parking lot and caused problems.

"Creating a nuisance, doing donuts, spinning wheels, shooting off guns and Sunday night it really got out of control," Mornino said.

"This is absolutely a problem," said Ward 8 Alderwoman Cara Spencer.

Spencer tells 5 On Your Side's Robert Townsend the city's treasurer's office owns the parking lot and must ensure that it's safe.

"First, I want to say I talked to the owners of Pieces STL this morning, and they're devastated. It's a fairly new business that just received an award from the state last Thursday," Spencer said. "As for the City Treasurer's Office, again it's my understanding that they do operate that parking lot and I think making sure the security measures, whether there are cameras, lighting, they must be kept in good working order and those things must be taking place."

"They have been doing this every Sunday. People are just parking out here in the parking lot. They don't even go into the bar. It's crazy," said Morino.

Police also intend to look into about a dozen car break-ins that happened in that same Soulard area hours in a gated parking early Sunday morning before the shooting incident.

If your car was broken into, you are asked to call St. Louis police.
