Imo's delivery driver dies after shooting in Tower Grove South

"At about 12:30 am my funny, quirky, compassionate, sincere, music-loving, animal-loving, goofball of a brother left us completely," his sister wrote on Facebook.

ST. LOUIS — An Imo's Pizza delivery driver died Sunday, four days after a shooting in south St. Louis.

Family members told 5 On Your Side David Matthews died Sunday morning at the hospital surrounded by his family and friends.

St. Louis police say someone shot Matthews in the Tower Grove South neighborhood on the Fourth of July. It happened around midnight near Potomac and Gustine. Investigators say the driver was shot multiple times.

"I knew someone was shot. It was kind of obvious because the crime scene and that many people around here," Mark Wyrosdick, who lives on the street where the shooting happened, said.

According to Matthews family members, someone shot David Matthews twice in the neck while he delivered a pizza on Potomac street.

Paramedics rushed him to the hospital, where he underwent hours of surgery. Relatives thought he would eventually recover from his injuries, but he died four days later.

His family wrote on Facebook:

"My brother was doing great, like, I think the doctors are exaggerating-great. He was responsive to yes/no questions, and could move his arm when asked. The doctors and nurses were amazed at how great he was doing, considering the severity of his injuries. I felt pretty hopeful to be honest. I knew there was a long road ahead, and it wasn’t going to be easy for him, but I had some serious hope, I could see the light. Friday night I finally slept. Early Saturday morning pressure built at the base of his brain and caused a major stroke. Not the kind that you can recover from, this one took everything he had left. He was no longer responsive. Throughout the day his vitals were proving what we feared most. He was not there anymore, he was just a shell. At about 12:30 am my funny, quirky, compassionate, sincere, music loving, animal loving, goofball of a brother left us completely. He was a generous and kind person who would do anything for anyone."

Friends of Matthews have set up a GoFundMe for his medical and funeral costs.

Police have made no arrests in the case. If you have any information, you can call CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
