ST. LOUIS — A former Saint Louis Public Schools employee was charged after police said he slammed a 6-year-old child's head into a table while supervising lunchtime at a daycare center earlier this month.

St. Louis prosecutors filed charges Wednesday against 58-year-old Gregory Filben for a felony count of endangering the welfare of a child, resulting in physical injury.

According to a probable cause statement from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, on April 12, officers with the department responded to the Wilkinson Early Childhood Center at Roe Elementary in St. Louis’ Franz Park neighborhood.

Arriving officers spoke to the mother of the child, who said Filben slammed the boy's head into a table while supervising him during lunchtime.

Multiple witnesses confirmed the mother's account, police said.

Filben posted 10% of a $30,000 bond on Wednesday and was released from custody. His next court appearance was scheduled for May 2. A judge ordered him to have no contact with the victim.

In a statement, a district spokesperson said the district has fully cooperated with the investigation and Filben is no longer an employee.
