USA TODAY - Forget coffee mugs, T-shirts and bronze statues. Former president George H.W. Bush has socks adorned with his own image.

The 41st president, who has a thing about colorful hosiery, wore this pair Tuesday as he accepted anaward for public service from the Lyndon B. Johnson Foundation.

Bush spokesman Jim McGrath tweeted a pic of the former president, Barbara Bush and Johnson's daughters, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Johnson Robb, who were on hand in Houston to present the award. After inquiries about Bush's socks, McGrath explained Wednesday in another tweet that they were a gift from a Canadian fan in Markham, Ontario.

The face socks rank right up there with the Superman socks Bush sported for his 89th birthday in June.

Judging from USA TODAY's photo archives, it looks like Bush donned a similar pair Sunday while attending the Houston Texans football game against the New England Patriots.
