First responders rescue man near Meramec River after riverbank collapses, pinning him underneath rocks

About 15 rescuers helped the man from underneath the rocks, according to the Valley Park Fire Protection District assistant fire chief.

VALLEY PARK, Mo. — A man was rescued near the Meramec River at Simpson Park Monday afternoon after the riverbank he was fishing on suddenly collapsed, pinning him underneath rocks. 

According to Valley Park Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief Curtis VanGaasbeek, a man was sitting on the riverbank and fishing between Simpson Lake and the Meramec River at Simpson Park around 5 p.m. Monday when part of the bank collapsed and he was pinned underneath rocks. 

Responding rescue crews used a combination of airbags and rope to save the man, VanGaasbeek said. About 15 rescuers helped the man from underneath the rocks. His injuries were not life-threatening.
