Teenage homicide suspect back in custody after escaping

He was charged with a violation related to the escape.

ST. LOUIS — The 17-year-old murder suspect who escaped from the St. Louis Juvenile Detention Center in early February was returned to the facility Tuesday.

The teen was returned shortly before noon Tuesday, according to a statement from the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court. He was charged with a violation related to the escape.

Authorities did not share details on how the suspect got back into police custody.

The suspect had been detained since Dec. 8, 2023, and was facing second-degree and first-degree assault charges for an Oct. 24, 2023, homicide that happened in the 4200 block of Shreve Avenue. Officials did not release his name because he is a juvenile.

He had escaped from the facility on Feb. 3.

Court staff called police and provided information around 6 p.m. that day about the suspect immediately after the escape, according to the circuit court.

Police dogs searched the area near the detention facility and found the suspect's shirt outside the building, sources told 5 On Your Side's Christine Byers. Surveillance footage showed that he escaped through the parking garage by rolling under a security gate.

No further information was provided.
