ST. LOUIS — A man is dead after being a passenger to a speeding driver early Saturday morning, a brief report from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said.

Police responded to a crash at East Grand Boulevard and North Florissant Road around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

An unidentified man, 37, was driving north on Grand Boulevard at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the car near the intersection and slid into the southbound lanes, the SLMPD report said. He sideswiped a MetroBus parked at the curb.

The speeding driver's vehicle continued to slide down East Grand Boulevard and eventually hit an electric signal, a streetlight and fire hydrant— all on the northeast corner of East Grand Boulevard and Emily Street.

The speeding car's driver and passenger had to be removed from the car with the help of the St. Louis Fire Department. EMS transported them to the hospital, police said.

The driver is listed in critical condition, and the passenger, 34-year-old Kevieon Smith of St. Louis, died.

The MetroBus driver was not injured.

Police said the speeding driver refused to provide a statement or details about the crash.

Accident Reconstruction will be handling the ongoing investigation.
