1 killed Saturday night in Jefferson County crash

The car swerved off the roadway and struck a fence and a large rock before it overturned and struck a tree.

FESTUS, Mo. — A Fenton man died after his car ran off the road and crashed Saturday night in Jefferson County.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the crash happened just before 8 p.m. Saturday in Festus. Jeffrey M/ Stoppelmann, 52, was driving northbound on Mapaville-Hematite Road near Little Creek when his car traveled off the right side of the roadway. 

The driver overcorrected, swerving back onto the road and off the left side of the roadway, according to MSHP. The car struck a fence and a large rock before it overturned and struck a tree. 

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. According to MSHP, he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
