Large, damaging hail affects St. Louis area

A big hailstorm battered lots of cars and homes in O'Fallon, Missouri, shortly after Thursday afternoon.

ST. LOUIS — Storms brought damaging and dangerous hail to the Greater St. Louis area Thursday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, the storm has produced golf-ball-sized hail that can damage cars, homes and other property.

Quarter-sized and baseball-sized hail have also been reported in areas such as Warrenton, Eolia, and Hillsboro, Missouri. 5 On Your Side is reviewing reports of damaged vehicles.

According to a spokesperson with the Worden Fire Department, there were "some broken windshields," along Interstate 255 in Madison County, Illinois. The department also asked drivers to avoid the area of I-55 southbound between mile markers 37 and 33 because multiple cars were damaged by hail.

The fire department and police are currently at the scene. The roadway is potentially closed at this time.
