Man arrested after Metro East cemetery, homes spray-painted with swastikas

The suspects vandalized homes in the 3000 block of Sunset Hills Boulevard.

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Police have arrested a 34-year-old man in connection with vandalism of multiple homes early Saturday morning in Edwardsville.

Police said homes were vandalized in the 3000 block of Sunset Hills Boulevard.

According to Edwardsville police, the vandals tried to make Swastikas. Police believe this occurred between 12 a.m. and 4 a.m.

At Sunset Hill Cemetery, staff should be preparing for Memorial Day celebrations but instead they’re washing and scrubbing off Swastikas spray painted on dozens of headstones.

Mark Johnson, the cemetery’s grounds superintendent, said it’s heart breaking. He told 5 On Your Side that roughly 200 headstones were damaged.

Sunset Hill Cemetery is the resting place for more than 1,300 veterans.

“They fight for freedom and that Swastika represents a different lifestyle. It’s kind of a slap in the face,” said Johnson.
