EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois State Police(ISP) said the armed man shot by police as he allegedly fired rounds at homes and passing motorists has died.

A press release from the ISP said officers from East St. Louis and surrounding police departments, including Washington Park, responded to the scene around 6 a.m. Monday. When they arrived, they found a nude man with multiple guns at the intersection of 16th and Gaty Avenue.

The man, who police identified as 41-year-old Jason Brooks, fired shots at bystanders, then in the direction of two officers, the release said.

The officers returned fire, hitting Brooks. He was hospitalized and has died in a St. Louis area hospital, according to the ISP.

No officers were injured.

Tomlinson says police felt the man was a threat because he was allegedly pointing weapons at cars. The man was allegedly armed with a shotgun and pistol.

Illinois State Police are helping with the investigation and forensics.
