O'FALLON, Mo. — O'Fallon Police are asking parents and children to be on the lookout for a man they said tried to convince a 12-year-old girl to get into his car Tuesday.

In a Facebook post, police said the incident happened on Bluemont Court in the Monticello Estates Subdivision. They said a 12-year-old girl was walking the subdivision when a man driving a blue minivan pulled up next to her and asked if she wanted to get in.

The girl ran to the neighborhood pool and told the lifeguard on duty, who called the police.

Police said they could not find the van in question and do not know what the man's intentions were.

They said this was the first incident of this type reported to the police in this area in "recent memory," and said they wanted to dispel any rumors on social media.

They also encouraged parents to have a discussion with their children about what they should do in a similar situation.
