SLYSA fields flooded after levee breach; executive director thinks it'll be a year before teams can play there

While some people are starting to see flood waters recede, the Executive Director of the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association says they'll be stuck looking at a flooded field for about six to eight weeks.

While some people are starting to see flood waters recede, the St. Louis Youth Soccer Association says they'll be stuck looking at a flooded field for about six to eight weeks.

"The Mississippi River, it's mighty. And when that river starts flooding in, there's not much you can do," said SLYSA Executive Director Johann Arnason. "The fields are as deep as 16 feet under water. We're expecting that the water will stay at the complex for six to eight weeks. After that, we got a long, long process of getting the facility back up and running."

Arnason says the association took a big hit this year when their players could no longer play on their field.

"This has a big effect. And we kind of know that, being in the flood plane in St. Charles. But when people say it floods all the time, it's not correct. It only flooded twice in 25 years and both because of levee breaches."

Arnason says cleaning up this mess will cost the organization anywhere from $500,000 to $1 million.

But the biggest loss? Not having their star players out on their home turf.

"It's going to be a long time. And it's still raining, so... what is, like, a weekend without rain, you know?" said coach Chris Bates.

For now, many of the teams are playing on rented fields, but the association said they did have to cancel some of their games.
