St. Louis County Executive announces grants for 5 organizations to help feed people amid pandemic

Five organizations will receive a total of $2.6 million to help feed people in the community

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — St. Louis County Executive Sam Page announced that the county will provide grants for agencies to help provide food to those in need of food amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Five organizations will receive a total of $2.6 million to help feed people in the community.

Here are the organizations receiving money:

$1.3M to Operation Food Search – will offer free meals between June 1 and the end of August

$755,000 St. Louis Area Food Bank – 40,000 to 60,000 meals per week at mobile distribution sites throughout the county

$500,000 to Urban League – will conduct events to distribute food and household goods from May 7 to the end of August and food and toiletries to seniors weekly

$110,000 to Link Market – four weekly popup markets that will offer access to healthy, affordable food to food deserts

$27,000 to Pot Bangers – over 12 weeks it will serve over 1,600 meals

“In America we shouldn’t really have to worry about if families have what they need to eat,” Page said.

On May 18, some businesses will be able to reopen in the county. Page said guidelines are now posted on stlcorona.com.

“We know a lot of our businesses are anxious to get started,” Page said. “We also know a lot of our businesses aren’t ready for May 18.”

During Monday’s briefing, he said he believes some businesses will still hesitate when it comes to reopening on May 18 as they try to manage the risk of COVID-19 in their place of businesses and how they decide how much business they will have as they actually reopen.

“I expect a great deal of people in St. Louis County to continue to work from home. In spite of the opportunity on May 18, many employers have told me that they are going to continue to work from home, people will continue to stay at home whenever possible,” Page said. “We’re going to have a gradual ease in our community as people start moving about more, start looking at our community and whether or not they feel safe to venture out.”

“We know that social distancing is important, staying at home whenever possible remains important,” Page said.
