'An exciting time': Thousands of service members pass through Lambert Airport on their way home for the holidays

St. Louis Lambert International Airport was a sea of green Tuesday, as USO Missouri hosted its annual "Green Day" event.

ST. LOUIS — St. Louis Lambert International Airport welcomed thousands of service members heading home for the holidays Tuesday.

It's all part of the annual 'Green Day' event.  Thousands of troops started trickling into Lambert as early as 2 a.m.

"I am very excited about the holidays," Private Amir Morales said.

Many, including Army Specialist Caleb Williams, were eager to spend the special time of year with those they love most.

"I'm looking forward to spending time with family and some good home-cooked meals and just relaxing for a little bit," he said.

Every year in mid-December, USO Missouri hosts service members at Lambert Airport. The annual event, known as "Green Day, Holiday Block Leave," marks the start of the troop's journeys home for two weeks of well-deserved family time.

"It's an exciting time because all these young men and women are anxious to go home and see their families," USO Missouri volunteer Daniel Hopkins said.

While the service members wait for their flights, USO Missouri provides food and activities for them.

Hopkins said the simple gestures, not only impact the men and women in uniform but also the volunteers on the other side.

"I never served in the military, it's actually one of my regrets in life, so this is kind of my way of paying that back, and I'm serving the troops that come through here," he said.

Several troops 5 On Your Side spoke to said they were just excited to do the simple things with their family and friends, like sitting on the couch talking to them, telling them about their military experience and enjoying home-cooked meals.

"I'm very excited. I would break my bank to just go back home and see my family. I miss my family so much," Private Sandra Sandoval said.

That readiness to be in the arms of those they love, equally shared with the ones who will be waiting for them on the other side of the plane.

"They're really excited. They pre-booked my ticket in advance, they're just like,' Yeah, we are getting you home,'" Private Alexa Aviles said.

Between the pictures and the snacks, the main mission is to make sure these heroes and their families know Americans appreciate their sacrifice.

"Thank you for your service and what people don't realize is their family sacrifice as much as they do," Hopkins said.
