Alderwoman Cara Spencer announces campaign for St. Louis mayor

Spencer lost to Jones in the 2021 race for mayor.

ST. LOUIS — 8th Ward Alderwoman Cara Spencer announced Thursday that she is joining the St. Louis mayoral race.

Incumbent Tishaura Jones and Spencer previously faced off on the 2021 election ballot, in which Jones defeated Spencer with 51.68% of the vote to become the city's first Black woman to serve as mayor.

"After much encouragement, I have decided to announce my candidacy for mayor," Spencer tweeted Thursday morning. "To make our city grow, make our city safer and make our city work. Let's do this!"

Jones officially announced her reelection bid last week with a campaign kickoff event at the Third Degree Glass Factory.

Spencer was elected to the St. Louis Board of Aldermen in 2015. She represented the 20th Ward before the city's 28 wards were slashed in half in 2023.

A campaign kickoff party for Spencer will take place from 5-7 p.m. June 4 at the Post Building, 900 North Tucker Blvd.
