Victor Scott II to start season with St. Louis Cardinals following Dylan Carlson injury

St. Louis will be without three of its outfielders following Dylan Carlson's injury.

PHOENIX — One of the St. Louis Cardinals' top prospects will start the 2024 season with the team after an injury to outfielder Dylan Carlson on Monday.

President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Victor Scott II will be part of the Cardinals' Opening Day roster. The team's full Opening Day roster has not been finalized, he said.

Scott was selected in the 2022 MLB Draft by St. Louis. In his first full season, he tied for the Minor League lead with 94 steals between High-A and Double-A. He also led all Cardinals Minor Leaguers with 166 hits and had a .303 batting average.

Dylan Carlson suffered a sprained AC joint following a collision with outfielder Jordan Walker in Monday's spring training game.

"It's obviously unfortunate for DC, who had a really good camp, was swinging the bat well and yesterday with that collision, he ended up spraining his AC joint in his left shoulder," Mozeliak said. "And that's going to obviously take some time before he can get himself back."

St. Louis will be without three of its outfielders following Carlson's injury.

Tommy Edman is recovering from an operation on his wrist in October. Lars Nootbaar was injured when he crashed into the outfield wall trying to make a catch earlier this spring. Imaging revealed he had two non-displaced fractures in his ribs.

"You think about sort of the stress of our outfield that's been under, not having Tommy Edman, not having Nootbaar and now losing DC. It's gonna be challenged," he said. "But one thing we know about Victor Scott is he's a talented defender and certainly will help our outfield in that regard."

The Cardinals will begin the regular season against the Los Angeles Dodgers at 3:10 p.m. on Thursday.
