When you go to a Vashon basketball game, you're probably going to see one guy, Mario McKinney, better known as Rio.

"I love Mario, he can shoot, he can dunk, he's an all-around player,” senior teammate Donyae McCaskill said.

“A lot of potential, he got the chance to make it,” junior Cam’Ron Fletcher said.

He’s the real deal for the Wolverines, but he’s not the only one.

You have guys like Cam'ron Fletcher and Donyae McCaskill and so on.

“Ah yeah, they don't even know what we have, they think we just have one player, but we have so much more,” McCaskill said.

"People come in to kind of recruit one or two of our kids then they end up seeing we have other kids that are pretty good as well,” head coach Tony Irons said.

It's all because of the environment within the Vashon program. There are no short cuts. Everything is earned and like coach Irons tell his guys, win and the rest will take care of itself.

"We always say the best part about winning is winning provides opportunity for all of them,” Irons said.

It helps the players get the rings they desire, and college scholarships they dreamed of. Which is the real win for Irons and his staff.

"It's not just on us, it's on coach too because he is doing everything he can so everybody can get a scholarship," Mizzou signee, Mario McKinney said.

“You can just tell the coach is like a father figure, they just don't care about what you got going on right now they care about your future,” Fletcher said.

As players move on to play college ball or become great young men. The rock gets passed to the up and coming players who will soon help those behind them, because it's all about we, not me at Vashon.

"Trying to put a team oriented situation in their minds to be able to understand if I help the team, we are successful then it ends up helping us individually get what we want out of this, it's no better feeling seeing them sign the dotted line to be able to get their college education paid for,” Irons said.
