Safety upgrades coming to 33 St. Louis County roads

The improvements are coming to roads with high rates of serious crashes.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — After a record amount of road construction in 2023, the Missouri Department of Transportation and St. Louis County Public Works want you to know they still have more plans for additional safety upgrades on our streets.

County Executive Sam Page made the announcement personally about a $4 million partnership between MoDOT and the county to improve 33 roads that have a high rate of serious crashes and pedestrian fatalities.

Earlier this month, Page said, "This will make a profound difference on how St. Louis County addresses the stretches of roads that need traffic safety improvements to protect drivers from serious harm."

We spoke to David Wrone from St. Louis County Public Works about this announcement. He said they'll be installing "guard rails and traffic-calming devices."

So, what is a traffic-calming device?

"An example of a traffic-calming device is a median that narrows lanes and subconsciously gives motorists the imperious to slow down," Wrone said.

A 5 On Your Side viewer from north St. Louis County said she drives to Edwardsville each day for work. Robin also said lighting and visibility issues around curves on Interstate 270 concern her, especially going westbound around the Chain of Rocks Bridge at the end of the day.

The partnership is yet to announce the exact locations for this project, but it sounds like that would be a good area to evaluate.
