O'Fallon, Missouri, car dealership devastated by baseball-sized hail, more than 300 vehicles impacted

5 On Your Side meteorologists said O’Fallon and Wentzville had the highest concentration of hail with sizes similar to baseballs.

O'FALLON, Mo. — Hail came down hard Thursday across the Bi-state.

5 On Your Side meteorologists said O’Fallon and Wentzville had the highest concentration of hail with sizes similar to baseballs.

Meteorologist Tracy Hinson said that some of the larger hail can fall as fast as anywhere from 20-40 miles per hour.

Travers Automotive and RV Group in O'Fallon, Missouri, said it felt the brunt of the hailstorm.

More than 300 cars and RVs were damaged combined.

Owner Glenn Travers said they'll bring in new cars and they plan to have a hail sale next week.

Travers said by Friday afternoon, 30% of the cars were off the lot and new inventory came in. He also said they ordered 100 new RVs, which will arrive in two weeks.

On Friday, Travers said three RVs were already sold due to significant savings.

"They weren't worried about the 'dings,' functionally they can operate properly," Travers said. "A lot of it is superficial, but the engine, transmissions and mechanics of the cars are still good."

He said some stuff will not be able to be saved. If that happens, it will go to wholesale and be sent off as auction items.

They won't sell anything unsafe or not in working condition, he added.

For any minor repairs, they'll fix it.

In his 28 years of business, this is the third "hail sale" for Travers, adding that, this is the worst hailstorm they've ever had.

"It’s crazy, when 'hail sales' happen, people flock because they think it’s a great deal. It’s happened before, people love bargains," he added.

Those vehicles weren't the only ones hit.

"We've had storms here and there, but nothing this quick ... this fast ... this hard," Lynn Schwane said.

Schwane lives in the Walden Pond neighborhood nearby and said their truck is brand new.

"We actually ordered it two years ago ... got it about year ago after a 12-month wait," Schwane said.

Now, it could be totaled and the blow is felt beyond that.

"We got a new roof about three years ago and it may be replaced again," she added.

She's on the lookout, not trying to lose even more money by potential scammers.

"We've seen dozens of trucks up and down the street all day," Schwane added.

3 Brothers Gutters & Roofing co-owner Don Walker provided tips to avoid being tricked.

"Most reputable companies will not be knocking on doors. If you look at the gutters and if your gutters have dents, then your roof probably does. There are some shady contractors on Google," he added.

Despite the damage, Schwane is counting her blessings.

"Everyone is safe, things can be replaced but it's good that we're all safe," she added.
