ST. LOUIS – Heartworm is hitting one animal rescue group pretty hard.

Right now Gateway Pet Guardians is treating 32 cases. They said volunteers can't rescue any more dogs from the euthanasia list at the St. Clair Animal Control because every dog on that list has heartworm.

All 13 of them including a black lab named Nero.

The group is trying to raise nearly $20,000 for treatment through its healing hearts campaign. Click here if you would like to donate.

In addition to raising money, Gateway Pet Guardians wants pet owners to protect their pets from the disease. They said every dog that goes outside is at risk of getting heartworm, which is transmitted through mosquito bites.

Veterinarians suggest getting monthly preventatives to keep your pet healthy.
