ST. LOUIS COUNTY — Police have arrested the man they said fired shot at an officer during a traffic stop in north St. Louis County Tuesday night.

On Wednesday, Hazelwood police identified him as Jalen L. Jarrett. Just a few hours after identifying him, he was taken into custody in north St. Louis County. Warrants will be applied for Thursday.

Hazelwood Police said their officers had conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of North Hanley Road and Santa Bella Drive around 8:30 p.m. When the officers alerted the driver to the numerous outstanding warrants they found through a record check, the driver sped away and nearly struck one of the officers and a bystander, the police department said in a press release.

A pursuit was initiated by the officers, to which they followed the car toward Florissant Road and Interstate 270 in Florissant before the driver crashed. The driver managed to escape on foot into a nearby wooded area north of the crash location, but a male passenger stayed inside the car.

While placing the passenger into custody, a single gunshot was fired from the wooded area the driver was believed to be in.

Police said the officer was not shot, and they are still looking for the man who fired the shot.
