ST. LOUIS — One of St. Louis’ favorite spots for barbecue showed off its food at the 'American Royal World Series of Barbecue' over the weekend.

Sugarfire Smoke House’s Mike Johnson took home first place in the ‘baked beans’ category and took third in the ‘side dish’ overall.

The competition took place from Sept. 12 through the 15 and featured over 400 teams from more than seven countries.

The ‘sides competition’ was divided into three categories: baked beans, potatoes and vegetables. To be eligible for the Side Dish Overall, contestants must have entered all three sides categories. The combined scores from each category determined the overall champion.

Sugarfire dominated the baked beans category with their signature hot and spicy baked beans. They received a perfect score from five of the six judges.

The first-place score was then combined with Johnson’s potato and vegetable scores, with the mean of all three landing Sugarfire third place in the Side Dish Overall.
