'Unity is Power': Schnucks unveils new employee shirts combatting racism

The shirts read "unity is power" on the front and "we stand together against racism" on the back

ST. LOUIS — Schnucks recently revealed new employee shirts that support racial equity ahead of Black History Month.

The grocery chain released photos Friday of the shirts, which are black with white font reading "unity is power" on the front and "we stand together against racism" on the back.

The shirts are part of the store's Unity Is Power plan, which aims to support diversity, equity and inclusion.

"As we strive for racial equity and social justice, we support our Black teammates and teammates of Color," Schnucks said on its website. "We express our values through how we treat each other, how we use our resources and how we affect our communities."

Schnucks also said Monday — which is Martin Luther King Jr. Day — that it will continue its decades-long partnership with the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis. As part of the partnership, and in honor of Black History Month, St. Louis-area Schnucks customers can "Round Up at the Register" from Feb. 3-16 to support the Urban League's Save Our Sons initiative. The program helps economically disadvantaged African American men in the St. Louis area find jobs and earn livable wages.

Donations in other markets will support the National Urban League.

“Schnucks is a prime partner whose investment helps us sustain our efforts to help those in need in the communities we serve; our relationship spans decades,” said Urban League President and CEO Michael P. McMillan in a news release. "We appreciate the weekly food donations that help us serve so many in need throughout our community and we are especially thankful for the Schnucks customers who also generously support us when they Round Up at the Register."
