Looking for a job: Make sure you can answer this one simple question

What do you want?

ST. LOUIS — Bernie Frazier has years of experience working in HR and Corporate Recruiting. She's worked for companies like Proctor and Gamble, Purina, and Sara Lee just to name a few.

When it comes to jobs, she said there’s one simple question everyone has to answer “What do you want?”

“It’s so important for people to be able to answer that question because it’s the foundation of not only a job search, it’s the foundation of your career," said Frazier.

When she asks clients this question, she said many people don’t even know how to answer.

“Either they respond with what they do, what they’ve done, what they think they can do or what other people have told them to do. I always go ‘no that’s not the question. The question is 'What do you want'? What is it that brings you joy?," said Frazier.

Frazier now spends her time publicly speaking about career goals, consulting with clients and recently wrote a book about her experiences. She said knowing what you want is key.

“It’s like going down the cereal aisle. If you don’t have an idea of what type of cereal you want and you see the full gamete of cereals, you’re overwhelmed by it," she said.

Once you can answer that question, your search can start.

“Their success is in them but a lot of time they need an idea of how to get to it," she said.
