Deputy shoots man who pulled out gun in Washington Co.

Deputies said the man lied about who he was, refused to cooperate and then pulled out a gun.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Mo. — A sheriff’s deputy shot a man Saturday night near Potosi, Washington County Sheriff Zach Jacobson confirmed.

It started when a woman requested a deputy to go with her when she picked up her 14-year-old stepchild from a friend’s house. The child refused to leave, she told deputies, so she called the sheriff’s office.

Deputies realized a man in the passenger seat of the woman’s car had a warrant out for his arrest. They asked for his name and he gave a fake one, deputies said.

When one of the deputies asked the man to get out of the car he refused.

The man pulled out a gun and pointed it toward the back of the car, deputies said. They felt threatened, so one of the deputies fired three times at the man, hitting him.

He was in surgery as of 10 a.m. Sunday. The man is expected to survive, Sheriff Jacobson said.

The deputies weren’t injured.

The sheriff confirmed the man had active warrants out for this arrest.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is taking over the investigation.
