Elderly man shot when stray bullet flies into north St. Louis business

The man was inside his business when he heard gunfire outside and felt pain in his chest, police said.

ST. LOUIS — An 80-year-old man was injured when a stray bullet went into his business Thursday night in north St. Louis. 

St. Louis police said the shooting happened at about 7:40 p.m. Thursday in the 2500 block of Vandeventer Avenue. Responding officers found an 81-year-old man who had been shot chest. He was conscious and breathing when he was taken to an area hospital.

The man told police he did not see the shooting, but he was inside his business when he heard gunfire outside and felt pain in his chest.

Witnesses told officers at least two suspects were shooting at each other nearby in the 3800 block of Cottage Avenue and ran from the scene after the incident, police said.

The investigation was ongoing as of Friday.
