MACOUPIN COUNTY, Ill. — A suspected murderer who escaped from the Macoupin County Jail Sunday is back behind bars.

At about 9:20 p.m. Monday, Macoupin County Sheriff Shawn Kahl said deputies arrested William Kavanaugh in the 200 block of Law Street in Shipman, Illinois. He was inside a friend's trailer and came out peacefully, the sheriff said.

The sheriff credited someone who called in a tip saying they had possibly seen Kavanaugh in the area.

Authorities said on Sunday that Kavanaugh accessed a closet, crawled through the ceiling and out of a second-story window of the jail, according to a news release.

Kavanaugh was one of two people arrested in July 2019 and charged in connection with a 2015 murder in Macoupin County. Chancey Hutson and Kavanaugh were charged in the death of Cody Adams.

Police said on New Year’s Day in 2015, Hutson and Kavanaugh went to Adams’ home in Woodburn, Illinois, intending to rob him. During a struggle, Adams was shot and died a short time later, police said.
