WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — A group of prominent St. Louis restaurateurs on Friday will open Madrina, a new Italian-American eatery, at 101 W. Lockwood Ave. in Webster Groves.

Stanley Browne and Arlene Maminta Browne, who own Robust Bistro and Wine Bar, and Frank Romano and Laura Burns, behind The Parkmoor Drive-In, said they were approached by Brendan Hickham, of Crestwood-based Saint Louis Group Business Brokers, who told them in May that C.J. Mugg’s Bar and Grill’s space would soon be available for lease, Romano said.

Days after C.J Mugg’s closed in July, the restaurateurs signed a 25-year lease on the space. Demolition began the following month, as Romano said the location was gutted, reconstructed and fitted to be a contemporary space with 1950s elements. It features tall, dark ceilings, red-leather-upholstered circular booths and a U-shaped, marble top bar that seats 20 guests.
