ST. LOUIS — Major League Soccer franchise St. Louis City SC won’t participate in the 2024 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, a development that comes as MLS’ leadership has denounced the current state of the national soccer tournament.

The U.S. Open Cup features professional and amateur teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer, which means clubs from the top-level MLS could end up facing an amateur side or one from a lower-tier minor league.

MLS in December initially said it wouldn’t its top-level franchises wouldn't participate in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup, with Commissioner Don Garber expressing displeasure with the tournament’s quality and stature, according to ESPN. Instead, the league would enter teams in its lower-tier MLS Next Pro league into the tournament.
