WEBSTER GROVES, Mo. — Alisha Blackwell-Calvert is an advanced sommelier studying to become a master sommelier, a title only 273 wine professionals worldwide have earned.

Her path as a sommelier in St. Louis has included work as a sales representative for a wine and spirits company and a sommelier for Reed's American Table, Elaia, Olio and Cinder House. In October 2023, Blackwell-Calvert became the head sommelier and beverage director at Madrina.

"The first American vinicultural area is in Missouri — Augusta, Missouri. So we are already tied into the history of wine in the U.S.," Blackwell-Calvert said.

"I would say that Missouri wine should be taken more seriously. There are producers like Eagle’s Landing Wine and Röbller Vineyard doing some fantastic balance styles of Missouri grape ... There are really cool people doing fun things in the Missouri wine scene, and I think they should get more credit because these are world-class wines."
