LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. — A deputy in Lincoln County adopted a dog after its owners said they were going to take it to the Animal Humane Society.

Earlier this month while serving an eviction notice along Highway 47, the owner of ‘Chloe’ told Deputy Dan Mayfield he was going to take the 7-year-old Dachshund to the Animal Humane Society because they could no longer afford her.

“When I heard this, I thought to myself the Humane Society would eventually euthanize Chloe because of her age and adoption probably was low,” said Deputy Mayfield. “While in the home, Chloe was happy, very friendly and just the sweetest dog. I could not let them take her to the Humane Society.”

Mayfield told the owner he would take Chloe and he would be back after his shift to pick her up.

“I went straight to the home to retrieve the dog to find her roped to a tree trunk. It broke my heart to see her like that, scared and alone. I took Chloe home and my kids just fell in love with her and she is the happiest dog.” Mayfield said. “It feels good to make a difference.”
