GRANITE CITY, Ill. — A Metro East woman says she sped away from a store, fearing for her life and her grandson's. It happened in Granite City, where police are on the lookout for a would-be criminal with a gun.

A woman posted on Facebook that she was leaving the Dollar Tree store on Nameoki Road and had just loaded her grandson into the car when a man with a gun ran at her in the parking lot.

She says she hopped in the driver’s seat and took off with the man chasing behind her.

Katie Oberhaus works in the same plaza and worries the parking lot could make other people easy targets for something similar.

“It's a light, but it's not super bright,” said Oberhaus. “And it's so open out here that anyone could pull up, do what they want to do and then get off very quickly, because all they have to do is get on the overpass and they're on the highway.”

Oberhaus and her co-workers are taking steps to keep themselves safe, starting with walking out together.

Granite City Police say the guy with the gun was a young black man who was sitting in a white SUV. They say they're actively investigating the case.
