ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — A second pipe burst in the basement of the St. Louis County Justice Center Wednesday has caused continued water damage to the building following a pipe burst Sunday on the top floor.

St. Louis County spokesperson Doug Moore confirmed another pipe burst occurred in the basement area of the center at about 2 p.m. Wednesday, impacting a nearby transformer. Building emergency lights were activated as a result of the incident; however, no evacuation happened.

Plumbers and electricians worked Wednesday to fix the issue as generators helped dry the floor, Moore said. There is heat inside the center but light and Internet access are limited due to the alarm system.

When the first pipe burst happened Sunday evening, it caused a leak on the ninth floor of the center, also setting off an alarm.

Employees saw water throughout the third floor, where the command center and administrative offices are located. Walls, ceilings and carpets were damaged in the leak.

A fire crew arrived at the building on South Central Avenue within 10 minutes to turn off the water, and work began to clean up the water.

No operations were affected and inmates did not have to be relocated, Moore said.

Moore said jail leaders were assessing the damage and would know more about its extent soon.
