Pools making a splash for locals trying to beat the heat

Staying cool has been the goal for many during this excessive heat warning.

ST. LOUIS — Beating the heat was the goal for a lot of people during this excessive heat wave, from grabbing custard at Ted Drewes to splashing parks.

But a fan favorite is hitting the pool, and the Indian Hills Swim Club is one hot-spot that's making a splash.

This family-owned pool has been running since 1962, so this isn't the first time, they've swum into a heatwave.

"We allow outside food and drink to come in, so they can bring in water," said General Manager Sarah Houska said. "We close down the hot tub, so no one overheats that way."

As kids are having fun, parents are making sure their children can beat the heat. "I have brought 3 bottles of water, they need to take routine breaks, sit in the shade for a little bit," one parent said. "They've enjoyed it because they can have a couple of popsicles, which I normally don't let them do that."

But the lifeguards on duty are also being checked on.

"With our staff, typically on a 4-hour shift, we give them a 15-minute break," Manager Chad Cognac said. "On the hotter days, we'll split that in two 10's. We encourage the guards to jump in whenever they want."

Indian Hills does have a baby pool, and they keep it the coldest because that's safer for babies.

If you're going to be outside -- try to stay cool and stay safe.
