DITTMER, Mo. — A propane tank caught fire Sunday morning after it was struck by lightning in Dittmer, Missouri, the property owner told 5 On Your Side.

According to the property owner, firefighters evacuated the area while they worked to extinguish the fire at the 8800 block of Tranquil Drive. As of 6:45 a.m., firefighters were still on the scene working the fire.

Strong storms arrived in the St. Louis area Sunday morning, producing large amounts of lightning and heavy downpours.

De Soto Rural Fire Protection District Chief Thomas FItgerald told 5 On Your Side that lightning struck a tree near the 500-gallon propane tank. The lighting damaged the line to the tank but not the  tank it self. The line leaked and caught fire. The line was between the tank and the basement.

He also said there was fire damage to the basement but no one was hurt.

No explosion was reported.
