ST. LOUIS — Cardinals shortstop Paul DeJong is adding to his list of honors this season.

After being named to his first all-star team earlier in July, DeJong has now been named the Cardinals' Heart and Hustle Award winner.

The Heart and Hustle Award is given out by the Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association, and is voted on by former players.

It is awarded to one player on each MLB team.

A final winner will be chosen from the pool of 30 after the season. Albert Pujols and David Eckstein have previously won the final award while representing the Cardinals.

In the clubhouse on Tuesday, DeJong didn't take the meaning of the award lightly.

"I'm very thankful to be chosen for that," DeJong said. "I put my work in every day, and try to be out there on the field every inning that I can and to be recognized as one of those guys, a kind of iron man type, it's a big honor for me."
