These winter house warming tips could save homes from fire, firefighters say

Space heaters, indoor fireplaces and other heating sources make house fires more likely to happen, the St. Charles Fire Department said.

ST CHARLES, Mo. — Temperatures have been dangerously low in the St. Louis region.

Heating sources such as; furnaces, space heaters, and fireplaces can pose a serious threat to the safety of residents, but this danger is preventable.

The St. Charles Fire Department issued tips for people to stay fire-safe and prepare for the low temperatures.

Deputy Chief Steve Brown said in a press release, "Remember that fire safety is a year-round concern, and it's essential to remain vigilant to protect your family and property."

The tips included:

  • Use space heaters with automatic shut-offs, and don't plug them into extension cords or power strips.
  • Keep anything that can catch fire at least 3 feet away from alternative heating sources.
  • Clean your fireplace and chimney before use and use a glass door or sturdy screen to stop stray embers.
  • Move outdoor firepits at least 15 feet away from anything that can catch fire before use.
  • Always have a fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Test and replace smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

"Please contact the Saint Charles City Fire Department at 636-949-3250 for further information on home fire safety," Brown said.
