To be honest, this isn’t even a competition!

What is gooey butter cake?

Gooey butter cake is a type of cake traditionally made in St. Louis, Missouri. Gooey butter cake is a flat and dense cake made with wheat cake flour, butter, sugar, and eggs, typically near an inch tall, and dusted with powdered sugar.

What is Boston cream pie?

A Boston cream pie is a yellow butter cake that is filled with custard or cream and topped with chocolate glaze. The dessert acquired its name when cakes and pies were cooked in the same pans, and the words were used interchangeably.

Here's what the 5 On Your Side crew said about gooey butter cake being better than Boston cream pie:

“Because Boston cream pie is not even a pie. I mean, don’t mislead us with the name. Call it a cake. 😀” Marianne Martinez said.

“Gooey butter …..DEFINITELY better!!! Better flavor…..easy to eat. Boston cream pie is sickening sweet with no taste of flavor just massive sugar and requires a fork/spoon to eat,” Diana Melton said.

“Gooey Butter Cake is richer, doesn’t dry out. This is key. You can enjoy a gooey butter cake for a long time, whereas you have a distinct time limit on Boston Cream Pie. 

I’ve had the Flour Bakery & Café’s “famous Boston Cream Pie” and eh. It’s good, but lacks the wonderfulness that is Gooey Butter Cake. I also appreciate that Gooey Butter Cake can be considered coffee cake, which means it can legitimately be considered breakfast. Butter cake is a mix of two wonderful worlds, is it cake? Is it a bar? Is it a golden brownie? I would venture to say the Gooey Butter Cake has more butter…and more butter is always better. And for those who say the Boston Cream Pie is better because is includes chocolate…false. Ever had a Gooey Butter Cake Brownie? Or a chocolate chip butter cake? They are dreams come true. 

I just really love butter cake and since I’ve moved here I’ve had a piece every night for dessert. I always have dessert.” Tracy Hinson said.

“My biggest issue with Boston cream pie: it is not even pie. It is a cake in a pie tin! Gooey butter cake is at least an actual cake!” Erin Richey said.

“It’s gooey, it’s buttery, and sprinkled with powdered sugar. What’s not to like?!!” David Mueth said.

“Boston cream pie is just wet cake. Nobody wants a wet cake.” Brandie Piper said.
