Lone Elk Park confirms first newborns of 2024

It's calving season, and park officials are warning the public to give animals and newborns plenty of space unless they want to be attacked.

ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. — Newborn bison and elk calves are now roaming the grounds of Lone Elk Park, park officials confirmed Thursday morning.

The elk and bison calves were born on Tuesday, the park said. The animals are in the middle of calving season, which usually runs from mid-May through June.

Park officials, as well as officials at St. Louis County's Department of Parks and Recreation, warn the public to give the animals and newborns plenty of space as the newborns' parents are incredibly protective and territorial.

“These are very large animals, about 800 to 1,000 pounds,” said Brian Schaffer, director of the Parks and Recreation Department. “Mothers are very protective and will defend their babies. You might not know you’re near a calf because the mother hides them in the woods, so please be sure to give them plenty of space.”

The park welcomed five elk calves and three bison calves last year. The park sits on 546 acres with wild turkey, waterfowl and deer. Visitors can explore the park daily from 8 a.m. to sunset.
