65-year-old man found dead in pool of blood in his own home

When police arrived, the front door was open and the man was dead just inside the home.

ST. LOUIS — A man was found dead in a pool of blood inside his St. Louis home early Sunday morning.

Police said they were called to the home on Upton Street near Minnesota Ave. in South St. Louis at around 3:45 Sunday morning. When they arrived, the front door was open and the man was dead just inside the home.

Neighbors say the victim -- a veteran -- had lived there for several years and was always friendly, adding that he was "the sweetest guy you could ever meet" and always willing to help the hungry or the homeless.

Police are not releasing the man's identity until they can notify his next of kin.
