ST. LOUIS — Hundreds of young students stepped out of the classroom Wednesday to help other children in need.

Students at Nance Elementary School in north St. Louis worked side-by-side with Cigna employees to pack meals as part of the Healthier Kids For Our Future initiative. About 240 kids in first through sixth grade scooped beans, rice and other ingredients needed to make red lentil jambalaya.

Altogether, they packed 30,000 jambalaya meals for children and families in need. The meals will be distributed by Feeding Children Everywhere.

Principal Natasha Mitchell said the effort is all part of the students’ real world hands-on learning.

“Our vision is to empower our students as global leaders to make a positive impact on our world,” Principal Mitchell said.

The meal-packing effort was all part of Universal Children’s Day, which is acknowledged on Nov. 20.
