Belleville 19-year-old charged with murder in Granite City shooting

GRANITE CITY, Ill. — A 19-year-old from Belleville, Illinois, has been charged with murder in the shooting of a man on Nov. 3.

The Granite City Police Department announced on Friday that Willie Lee Matthews Jr. has been charged with first-degree murder.

Police said they were called to a shooting at the 2600 block of Hodges Avenue at around 2:45 p.m. When they arrived, they found 23-year-old Charles L. Cooper, also of Belleville, shot multiple times.

Cooper was rushed to the hospital and received extensive treatment, but later died. After an investigation, Granite City police identified Matthews as a suspect and arrested him.

The department said Matthews would be transferred to Madison County Jail on Friday, where he will be held on no bond.
