ST. LOUIS — If you're a St. Louis resident, the city wants to give you its leftover free firewood.

Starting Monday, the St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry is offering the firewood on a first-come, first-serve basis at three city parks:

  • Forest Park, Lower Muny Opera parking lot
  • Carondelet Park, compost and recycling location off Holly Hills Drive
  • O’Fallon Park, north of Picnic Site No. 4

The department gets the wood from damaged trees it removes from streets and parks. It will typically drop off the wood on weekdays after 3 p.m. and doesn't guarantee that wood will be available every day. Commercial vehicles and trailers can't be used to pick up the wood due to park restrictions.

The firewood will be different sizes and from different species, but wood from ash trees, which are targeted by the invasive emerald ash borer, will not be available.

The offer is in effect until the first week of March.
