Significant pattern change brings fall weather later this week

We've been close to record highs the last several days. As the calendar turned to October, it's still warm. That will change in a big way by the end of the week.

ST. LOUIS — It's been exceptionally hot and dry the last several days. Even our mornings have been warmer than normal as well. That trend continues for the first part of this week.

The start of the week won't quite get to those records, but it will be a top 10 warm day each day to start the week as temperatures remain well above average.

Where's all our cool, fall air? It's bottled up in Canada still. This will be the source for our big change later in the week, but it will take some time to get here.

So why has it had such a hard time getting here? There has been a pretty decent logjam of systems in the way. The most notable being the strong high-pressure center that's currently overhead. As that finally breaks down and exits, it will make room for our coldest push of air in several months.

As this front moves in Wednesday, it will bring some welcome rain. This will be like a lot of the other systems recently. Very sporadic in nature, with a few pockets of locally heavy rain, while other areas miss out completely. We remain stuck in this drought, and it doesn't look any better after this.

But it will be significantly cooler. Temperatures are headed for the mid-40s in the city, and low 40s outside of the city. Our coldest air in months!

Overall, temperatures will be around 10 degrees below normal not only in the morning, but the afternoon as well. Sunday will be a touch more breezy. This kind of cool weather will be rather short-lived, but it certainly helps to finally bring a taste of fall weather for a weekend.
